Romelu Lukaku explains why he goaded the Everton fans after scoring against former club for Manchester United
The Belgium international cupped his ears towards the away end after making it 3-0 in United's 4-0 win at Old Trafford
Romelu Lukaku has spoken out about his goal celebration in Manchester United's 4-0 win over Everton, describing his decision to goad the Everton fans as "banter".
The Belgium international wheeled away in delight upon making it 3-0 before cupping his ears in the direction of the away end.
Manchester United fans were delighted with his celebration, but, unsurprisingly, the gesture didn't go down too well with the supporters of his former club.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Lukaku said: "We could have scored more in first half. We weren't clinical enough.
"Everton created problems in midfield and the manager gave us tips at half-time of how to sort it. In second half, Everton had a lot of control but quality was the difference in the end."
When asked about his goal and subsequent celebration he added: "I mean, it's another goal and I'm happy with the win. It's just a bit of banter, after the free-kick I missed.
"We don't look at our opponents, we stay focused on us. We know we can play better than we did today."
Lukaku's goal was his fifth of the season, which puts him joint level with Manchester City's Sergio Aguero as the Premier League's top scorer.
