Gareth Bale latest: Welsh star could still join Manchester United, even if he plays for Real Madrid in Super Cup clash
United and Real will meet in the Macedonian capital of Skopje on Tuesday night in the annual meeting of the Champions League and Europa League winners.
Much of the pre-match chatter has
surrounded Bale’s future at the Bernebeu and the recent reports linking
him with a move to Old Trafford.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho appeared to welcome the speculation by admitting United would ‘fight’ to sign Bale IF he does not feature in the Super Cup clash.
However, reports in the Spanish press claim he could still leave Madrid this summer even if he is selected my manager Zinedine Zidane.
AS point out that if Bale does make an appearance for Real on
Tuesday, it would not put off United as the Welshman would still be
eligible to play in the Champions League for another club next season.
Meanwhile, Spanish newspaper El Pais claim Real Madrid
may be open to selling Bale before the transfer window shuts as he ‘has
not been pulling up trees’ at the club and is slowly being eclipsed by
young Spanish duo Isco and Marco Asensio.
Their article reads: “Bale has not been pulling up trees, not even in
the absence of Ronaldo and not even when Zidane gave him the sign that
he liked him as a second striker.
“Whether it’s through his constant injury niggles or his inability to
relax, what is certain is that, from his pompous arrival four years
ago, Bale’s numbers have kept going down.
“Alongside that, he has been pressured by Isco and Asensio, two players on the rise.”
Los Blancos boss Zidane also side-stepped questions over Bale’s future during his press conference ahead of the game.
The Frenchman was quizzed on Mourinho comments a total of three times
by the press, but only said he was unconcerned by the reports and that,
for now, Bale is still a Real Madrid player.
“Mourinho’s flirtation with Bale doesn’t bother me, as he looks good, involved [in the team],” said the France legend.
“I think what's important is that the player is feeling well.
"On top of that, he's had a lot of continuous training sessions with us and that's what is the most important.
"At the end of last season it wasn't easy for him, he was almost out
for four months through injury but now he is very well, very
concentrated, he trains with the team.
"What interests me and what is important for us is not what the coach said, it's what we are going to do tomorrow. That is all.
"He [Mourinho] will prepare his team tomorrow, I will prepare my team," the Madrid coach added.
"It's the same thing with Cristiano [Ronaldo], we've also had stories
there. I think that people seem to want to blow the story beyond
proportion.
"We're concentrated on what we're doing and that's what is really important.
“Bale is a Real Madrid player. That is all I can say.”
