Michael Owen reveals his top four prediction for the 2017-18 Premier League season
We’ve almost made it, people. It’s been an awfully long summer but the 2017-18 season is now upon us.
This
weekend sees the Football League get underway and the Community Shield
between Arsenal and Chelsea. The week after that the Premier League
kicks off with an intriguing battle at the Emirates Stadium between
Arsenal and Leicester City.
It
promises to be another fascinating season, with most of the Premier
League’s top clubs having strengthened their squads with new additions
this summer.
As things
stand, Manchester City are currently the bookmakers’ favourites to win
the title, followed by Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, Arsenal
and Liverpool.
If you fancy an outsider then Everton (priced at around 10/1) are probably your best bet.
Every pundit will soon be asked to name the clubs they think will finish inside the top four this season.
It’s not an easy task this time around. Don’t believe us? Try it yourself.
Whichever teams you pick, a couple of big clubs are going to miss the cut.
Michael Owen reveals his top-four prediction
Michael Owen is one of the first pundits to nail his colours to the mast.
He believes the following clubs will secure a top-four finish this season: Man City, Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea.
Yep, there’s no room in Owen’s top four for either Arsenal or Tottenham.
Owen on Arsenal
"With
Arsenal I'm just not sure about the overall feeling within the club,”
Owen was quoted as saying by the Mirror. "My gut feeling is they could
win five straight games, but if they lose the sixth the Wenger out
brigade will come out which creates a negative atmosphere and that's
probably the main thing going against Arsenal."
He’s got a point, to be fair.
Owen on Tottenham
But
what about Spurs? They’ve been fantastic under Mauricio Pochettino over
the past two seasons and, crucially, have managed to keep all of their
best players.
Owen
reckons it’s the Wembley factor will make a big difference: ”Spurs have
the equivalent of 19 cup finals, going to Wembley will be great for
young players who know they might not get another chance to play there
and so everyone will be buzzing to play Tottenham away next season."
Owen reckons Liverpool can win the title
But which team does Owen think will win the title?
He believes it could finally be Liverpool’s year - provided they keep hold of Philippe Coutinho.
"Liverpool
did an amazing bit of business by signing Coutinho to a new contract,
especially when you look at Sanchez and Arsenal and the problems it's
causing around the club,” he added.
Since
Coutinho signed the new contract Liverpool have qualified for the
Champions League, bought more quality players and are in a better place
than they've been for a long time.”
Indeed, following Tuesday’s
3-0 victory over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena, the Reds’ odds of
winning the title will shorten even further ahead of the start of the
new season.
