Romelu Lukaku was guilty of 'massive mistake' in Man Utd defeat - Steve McManaman

STEVE MCMANAMAN accused Romelu Lukaku of not making the most of his opportunities in Manchester United's 2-1 loss to Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup tonight.
Lukaku scored for Manchester United but it was too little too late for Jose Mourinho's side after goals from Casemiro and Isco.

Jose Mourinho named a strong starting XI against Madrid with Lukaku making his competitive debut along with Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic.
But they were unable to break down Real's rigid defence until the hour mark.
United pushed for an equaliser late on but McManaman believes the Belgium international should have been celebrating a brace after missing a guilt-edge opportunity in the first 45 minutes.

"This was a really big mistake I thought," McManaman said on BT Sport at half-time.
"I know we can sort of brush over it but Lukaku must know he's offside surely.
"And then if he just runs into the centre area he is getting a tap in off Herrera.

"I thought that was a massive mistake. When goalkeepers make mistakes and centre halves they invariably lead to chances.
"That should have been a really good opportunity on goal.
"Maybe with the heat his brain is not switched on a little bit.
